Social, Political, and Family Issues in August Wilson’s Fences August Wilson’s Fences depicts life in the 1950s for a typical African American family. The play touches upon racism, shifting family dynamics, and the politics of war. While racism plays an important and vital role in the play, instead of lamenting the issue, Wilson uses the characters as a weapon against the rampant racism of the time. In the same fashion, the relationship between Troy, Rose, and Cory demonstrates the shifting cultural and family dynamics of the decade. Likewise, Wilson’s depiction of Gabriel as a wounded veteran who is not fully supported by the government that sent him off to war offers an enlightening commentary on the politics of the era. First, it can be applied to the father in the sense of the family as in the three generations represented in the play, but it can also be read as commentary on the father as in the historical meaning. When Troy is discussing Cory’s desire to play football, he says â€Å"The white man ain’t gonna let him get nowhere with that football† (8) and when he responds to Bono’s comment that Troy was just too early, with the remark â€Å"There ought not never been no time called too early!† (9), he is referring to the sins of â€Å"our fathers.† Instead of heeding Wilson’s advice to forgive and erase the power of racism, Troy decides to perpetuate the sins of our fathers by boxing Cory in with his own experience with racism. While Wilson uses Troy’s dialogue about baseball to showcase the racism of the past and its effect on the present, he also imbeds key moments in the play as a way to make the a udience identify with the characters. The situations and informal diction or vernacular in the play create an atmosphere of familiarity with the audience, and this familiarity helps the audience to realize that Troy, Rose, and Cory are just like them.
